Toshiba HD DVD

Toshiba, never admitting defeat, has once again cut its prices up to 50% to promote its HD DVD players. Their entry level players now carry an MSRP of ~$150.00. Expect an onslaught of various media-type commercials within the next few weeks. While we continue to hear rumors concerning the HD/Blu-ray War, we think we will just bide our time and revel in the news that now almost anyone can afford a player. Toshiba is still offering 5 free DVDs with purchase.

StreamMyGame

Good news for Linux Users. StreamMyGame has released a free Player that allows playing any PC game via a Playstation without lag. Compatible with Windows XP or Vista with MS DirectX8 to X10, and Linux installations up to Super HDTV 3200 x 2400, the services will be extended by March to include FiOS, Comcast’s Wideband, and British Telecom’s FTTP.

CEO Richard Faria is certainly jazzed about the idea. “I have a PS3 in my living room and PC in my office and my two kids both have old PCs in their bedrooms,” he said. “Now we can play games anywhere around the home.”

We wonder if they ever take time out to have a meal together. Sign up now for your free subscription.

Netflix logoNetflix subscribers on unlimited rental plans are now allowed endless streaming of movies on their PCs. Previously, the company offered a limited amount of viewing depending on a subscription rate, but it seems that now that it has a library of over 90,000 titles, this is their time to shine over the competition. If you now are on the $4.99 singular DVD Plan or 2 a month option, you will still receive two hours of instant streaming per month. It remains to be seen just how the competition will react to the news, not to mention the dwindling supply of local neighborhood video stores.

Outback Gift CardsThis appears to be the year of the Gift Card. If you received some that you don’t particularly want, you can always re-gift them or toss them in a drawer like an estimated 10 billion do. Or you can take them to Swapagift, an ingenious site where you can sell, trade, pay your bills, or donate them to your favorite charity. Registration is free and for $1.99 you can list each card with the monetary value or equal card you wish to receive. If you want to sell them outright to the site, you can receive up to 70% of their minimum balance to pay that overdue electric bill. Our kudos to a site that finally found a use for Vegans who ended up with a $100.00 credit for Outback Steakhouse.

Mitsubishi HC4900 Projector

If you finally got that surround sound system you wanted and would like to turn it into a home theater, Mitsubishi is offering you the chance. Their HC4900 Projector with 1080p (1920 x 1080) features 15,000:1 contrast, 1000 ANSI lumen brightness, a 7500:1 contrast ratio, and can handle both HD and Blu-ray. Knowing about a $500.00 rebate they are offering through January 31, we wandered over to Circuit City online where they listed it for $2,999.99, marked it down $700.00, and with the mail-in rebate you end up with a not too shabby price of $1,799.99.

3D SnowflakeYou have just realized that your buds are do anytime and you just had to finish “testing” their new electronic toys before wrapping them. You know that not only do you not have any wrapping paper left, your kids are bugging you that they don’t have anything to do after you spent your last cent on them. Combine both projects and send the kidlets to Paper Snowflakes. They can download wrapping paper, create gift tags, make snowflakes out of coffee filters, and even play a few games.

CompUSA logo  We’re very, very sad to report that one of our favorite retailers…CompUSA…will be closing all its stores. The financially troubled chain (which closed half its stores earlier this year) was just sold to Specialty Equity, an offshoot of Gordon Brothers Group, a private equity firm. On Friday, Specialty announced all remaining 103 CompUSA stores will close. Not surprisingly, competition from mega-chains Best Buy and Circuit City is to blame for CompUSA’s woes. There is good news however: Gordon Brothers promises an “orderly wind-down” of each store. Translation: expect major “Going Out of Business”  bargains this holiday season. Thanks for everything, CompUSA….we’ll miss you!
